Yamaha has a great track record with producing superior musical instruments and audio devices (amongst many others) so right off the bat it is a brand that inspires confidence. The fact that it is such a well established brand is obviously reflected in the price which is slightly higher than other speakers in this class, but this is offset by the peace of mind you get from knowing that you are buying a quality product. While the speakers are purposefully not much to look at you definitely won’t be disappointed by the audio quality there is no doubt that you get your money’s worth when purchasing these speakers.
When it comes to audio quality the Yamaha NS-AW294WH speakers does not disappoint. After seeing the size of the speakers I had some concerns about how well they would be able to perform, but I am happy to report that they exceeded my expectations. If you upgrade from some of the cheaper or generic speaker brands to these pair of Yamaha’s you will immediately hear the difference. For such speakers the woofer is actually pretty powerful and is able to deliver very accurate mid and low frequency responses. High frequencies are taken care of by the balanced dome tweeters that produce crisp clear audio.
The volume of the speakers is also very good, so if you want to remain on good terms with your neighbors you might want to ensure that you don’t crank the speakers too loud when used outdoors. If you decide to use these at parties, your guests can forget about having a conversation while standing next to these speakers at full volume as they will not be able to hear each other. You don’t have to worry about distortion at higher volume levels either, as the sound quality remains crystal clear.
There is not a lot to say about the design of these speakers as Yamaha has purposefully kept things rather plain. There are plenty of outdoor speakers that attempt all kinds of gimmicks to make them stand out or catch the attention, but these speakers go the exact opposite route. Yamaha have stated that the simple design is to ensure that the speakers look natural no matter where you place them in or around your house, which is more than what I can say about some of the more outlandish speaker designs that I have seen. If you don’t want a pair of speakers that looks like they have fallen off a UFO then the Yamaha’s are perfect. The speakers use a traditional shape for the cabinets and the grilles are also very plain with only the Yamaha logo in the middle of the grille. The plain design gives the speaker an elegant look and ensures that the focus is on the audio and not the cabinets. It also means that you have a professional establishment such as an office, restaurant or shop you can use these speakers without them looking gimmicky.
Included with the speakers are u-brackets which make mounting a breeze and gives you some leeway in how you want to orient the speakers. The speakers look just as good mounted vertically as they do horizontally which is great.
Due to the plain design of these speakers they might not look as durable as some other outdoor speakers on the market, but believe me they can withstand their fair share of hard knocks. The cabinets are actually weatherproof so they are drip, water and UV resistant and can be used outdoors without any worries. The grilles that cover the speakers are also powder-coated and designed to withstand even harsh weather. Often with cheaper outdoor speakers the grilles are the first to show signs of wear and tear or even rust which is not the case with the Yamahas.
The brackets used to mount the speakers are rather sturdy and while the weight of the cabinets are not that much it is still reassuring to have well-built brackets holding them up. Just because the speakers are weatherproof, doesn’t mean you have to purposefully expose them to the elements though. Mounting the speakers somewhere that is out of direct sunlight, rain and other elements will definitely increase the longevity of your equipment, which for something like these Yamahas is worth it.
When it comes to features the areas where the Yamahas excel is in the durability and sound quality. The overall design is also good, but might be a little plain for folks that enjoy having flashy sound equipment. These are basically a pair of no thrills speakers that deliver the kind of audio experience that you would expect from such a well known brand.
Yamaha NS-AW294WH Speaker Pros
- Audio quality that lives up to the name of the brand.
- Durable and weatherproof casing that can withstand the elements when used outdoors.
- Simple design to ensure that the speakers blend in with your environment.
- Can be mounted horizontally or vertically.
Yamaha NS-AW294WH Speaker Cons
- The design might be a little too plain depending on your tastes.
There is very little that I can fault about these Yamaha speakers and they certainly demonstrate why this brand is so well known and trusted. The sound quality is great for speakers of this size and the cabinets ensures that they don’t look tacky or out of place anywhere you decide to mount them. They might cost slightly more than similar sized speakers and look a little more plain, but don’t let that deter you from getting yourself a pair. If you appreciate quality audio you won’t regret the decision to invest in a pair of Yamahas.
